Jesus and the apostles did

October 5th, 2007

We pray because Jesus and the apostles did it.

When someone believes very strongly in something, they don’t only speak about it, but they do it too. We well know the proverb “actions speak louder than words” and this can be clearly seen in the life of Jesus with regards to prayer. Not only did God ask us to pray, but God Himself prayed, demonstrating how important prayer is in the life of every individual.

Very early in the morning, while it was still dark, Jesus got up, left the house and went off to a solitary place, where he prayed.
Mark 1:35 (NIV)

If Jesus needed prayer, then surely we do too. Indeed, the apostles who observed Jesus’ prayer habits continued to pray after Jesus returned to heaven, and taught others to pray too.

They all joined together constantly in prayer, along with the women and Mary the mother of Jesus, and with his brothers
Acts 1:14 (NIV)

If Jesus Himself regarded prayer as essential for His work, and the apostles followed His example of prayer, let us also follow His perfect example, and pray.
